Online Instructors
Education Development Center (EDC)’s EdTech Leaders Online has been approved by the TEA to provide the TxVSN-required professional development for virtual school teachers. EDC has also been approved as a Texas Continuing Professional Education Provider, and courses are available for CPE credit.

This eight-week online course enables educators to become qualified instructors of virtual school courses for students. Aligned to the NACOL National Standards for Quality Online Teaching, the course familiarizes participants with best practices in virtual school course instruction and builds important participant skills as online instructors for students. The course includes an in-depth exploration of effective strategies for teaching virtual school courses, as well as specialized training to prepare teachers to instruct online courses within their local school, district, organization or educational program. The course contains an introduction to the field of online learning and strategies to effectively deliver a standards-based curriculum, techniques for managing and instructing students, and a specialized preparation area, where participants learn skills using course management system instructor tools to personalize learning spaces and manage student information and activities. In addition, participants explore effective methods for blending online and onsite instructional activities. This course is available for 48 hours of Texas approved CPE credit.

Advanced Online Teaching Skills and Techniques is a seven-week course for experienced Virtual School and Professional Development facilitators. The readings and activities bring the basics of online facilitation to a higher- level, encouraging deep conversation about creating successful learning communities, promoting collaboration, and enhancing instructive techniques. Where appropriate, the course draws on free Web 2.0 Tools that support the pedagogical focus of each session. Participants work both individually and collaboratively throughout the course and create as a final project a comprehensive Facilitation Strategy List for successful online facilitation in a Web 2.0 world. This course is available for 36 hours of Texas approved CPE credit.

Prior to teaching courses offered via the TxVSN, teachers are required to take TxVSN-approved professional development that specifically focuses on learning to teach effectively in the online environment. Education Development Center, Inc (EDC), a not-for-profit (501c3) research and development organization established in 1958 and based in Newton, Massachusetts, has a long history as a national leader in curriculum development, professional development, educational technology and research. Over the past 50 years, EDC has remained a leader in educational materials development and the application of technology to education, with award-winning curriculum and professional development programs in all subject areas and for learners at all levels. In recent years, EDC has emerged as a national leader in online learning as well.
EDC’s EdTech Leaders Online program has gained national recognition for its capacity building programs and online courses. EdTech Leaders Online (ETLO) provides training, consulting and support for state departments of education, school districts and other educational organizations to enable them to build successful online learning programs and to improve student achievement. Since the program began in the fall of 2000, ETLO has trained more than 2500 online specialists in more than 35 states to provide online courses to more than 35,000 teachers, students and administrators.
EDC is currently providing the core online professional development training and online courses for the eight-state E-Learning for Educators program, funded by the US Department of Education to develop state-wide online professional development programs that meet core teacher quality goals in Alabama, Delaware, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. EDC has also partnered with the Southern Regional Education Board since 2002 to provide capacity building online training for its member state departments of education to prepare online instructors and course developers within each state.
